The first PDE5 inhibitor to be developed was Sildenafil Citrate, which became famously known as Viagra and produced by the American company Pfizer. Tadalafil was the next PDE5 inhibitor to be developed and was released as the brand name Cialis produced by the pharmaceutical manufacturer Eli Lilly. Both Cialis and Viagra are licensed as prescription only products in the UK and this means that a prescription is needed to supply them.

How long does Cialis and Viagra take to work?

Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) takes about 30 minutes to start working but can take up to an hour particularly if you have had a heavy meal. Cialis (Tadalafil) will also take about 30 minutes to start working but is not affected by food.

It is recommended to take either Cialis or Viagra about one hour before you plan to have sex.

How long does Viagra and Cialis last for?

Just to clear up a misconception, Sildenafil citrate and Tadalafil do not give you a permanent erection. You will still need to be aroused to achieve an erection. With Sildenafil citrate (Viagra) the improved ability to achieve and maintain an erection is between four and six hours. For Cialis (Tadalafil) the improvement will last for up to 36 hours.

With this in mind Cialis (Tadalafil) can be taken once in 48 hours, and Viagra can be taken once in 24 hours.

How do Cialis and Viagra work?

Both Viagra ( Sildenafil citrate) and Cialis (Tadaladil) are PDE5 inhibitors and work in a similar way. They improve blood flow to the penis, by relaxing the blood vessels and improving the ability of the erectile tissue to achieve and maintain an erection.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects of Viagra (Sildenafil citrate) include redness or flushing, indigestion, dizziness, nasal congestion, nausea, dyspepsia and headache.

Common side effects of Cialis (Tadalafil) include, headache, back pain, muscle aches, pain in arms and legs, facial flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion and reflux.

Are there cheaper versions available?

For Cialis (Tadalafil) tablets the answer is no. Although there is a version of Cialis called Cialis 2.5mg tablets and Cialis 5mg tablets which are intended to be taken one every day rather than ‘as required’. They are useful for patients who want to be ready whenever the opportunity arrives (by taking one lower dose tablet every morning) rather than having to wait up to an hour for the tablet to work.

For Viagra there are a lot of cheaper generic alternatives available. Pfizer themselves produce an unbranded version called Pfizer Sildenafil. Actavis and Teva produce a generic Sildenafil citrate and Sandoz produce a generic Sildenafil citrate which is popular because it is scored for ease of breaking in half.

Whichever brand you go for it is worth considering buying the higher strength and breaking them in half which is cheaper than buying the half strength.
