  • Studies have shown that you are four times more likely to stop smoking if you have help. You can find your free local Stop Smoking Service by searching by your postcode here. When smokers who have used their local Stop Smoking service were asked if they would recommend the service, 9 out of 10 of them said they would recommend it. As part of this service, your adviser can measure the levels of carbon monoxide in your body using a carbon monoxide monitor. 

  • Prescription treatments can also be effective in reducing cravings for nicotine and blocking the rewarding and reinforcing effects that smoking has. They can be used alongside support services

  • Scientific studies have been reviewed and indicate that exercise may contribute to reducing cravings and can actually help your brain produce anti-craving chemicals. Even something quick like a five-minute walk can help.

  • You might find it helpful to write a list of reasons to stop smoking. Then you can refer back to your list when you are looking for that extra motivation. 

  • It might be useful to save an emergency phone number in case you need it. The NHS Smoking Helpline is available on 0300 123 1044. You can call this helpline if you need to talk to someone about stopping smoking and dealing with cravings.
